Crystal Call

Animated film 3D - 2024

Romain MAYRAND, a 4th-year student at MoPA, presents CRYSTAL CALL, his 3rd-year final one-minute film on the theme of RETRO GAMING.

2024

Crystal Call follows a teenage girl as she dives into a vivid and captivating retro virtual world. While exploring this strange extraterrestrial canyon, mysterious anomalies begin to appear, progressively disrupting her experience.

In Crystal Call, Romain explores the interaction between a retro virtual universe and a teenager's perception. His main goal was to create an intriguing atmosphere, where light and vibrant colors immerse the viewer while gradually building tension as the universe unravels.

The biggest challenge for Romain was creating the glitches featured in his film. “Since I’m not very skilled in FX yet, it took me some time to figure out how to convey the idea of the universe transforming and malfunctioning,” he explains. This work was crucial to bringing his story to life. At the same time, animation posed another significant challenge. Being more focused on imagery, he had to put in extra effort to develop this aspect of the film.

Despite these challenges, Romain particularly enjoyed crafting the lighting atmospheres. Breathing life into this unique universe through the evolution of light, in sync with the character's emotions and events, deeply inspired him.

This experience solidified his decision to specialize in Image, focusing on creating environments, lighting, and compositing. The project also allowed Romain to strengthen his concept art skills, drawing inspiration from natural landscapes—a key element that further enriches his visual universe.
