Dock Fighters II

 

Erwan had always dreamed of one day being able to choreograph and animate a dynamic battle scene. With the revelation of the “retrogaming” theme for his 3rd year MoPA 3D Animated Film program solo film, he jumped at the chance!

Erwan explains: “Having never really known retro games, I wanted to reappropriate this theme and divert it, by playing on what a video game is in itself: a space where everything seems allowed, where everything seems possible, where everything is just lines of code but can seem so real”. That's why he chose to erase the constraints of a real retro game by showing a fight as if it were taking place in the real world. The main character and his avatar are identical in the game, giving the impression that the protagonist is actually fighting. But the feeling of power is quickly slowed when realities mix and the young man has to fight, not to win, but to survive! Pride gives way to terror...

Erwan really enjoyed imagining how the fight would unfold, imagining it as a duet dance, where each reacted according to the actions of the other. Conceived not as an end in itself, but as a means of telling his story and the psychology of his characters, he confides that he found it very interesting to construct this fight. What's more, by testing out a style he'd never tried before, but which had long appealed to him, Erwan was able to work with textures in a whole new way.

Our young 3D animation student's biggest challenge? Time management, and the compromises needed to finalize his film! Wishing to specialize in animation, Erwan spent a lot of time on this part, without neglecting the image part, for which he had many ideas and ambitions for his short film.
