Invent characters from the Hearthstone universe
You have already discovered the character design exercise carried out by students in the first year of their course at the MoPA animation film school through the creation of new characters from the world of the film The Trolls: now here is the chara design workshop carried out by students in their second year at MoPA!
Amandine GARDIE, 2D artist and lecturer at MoPA, once again accompanied our students on a creative chara design workshop. Although this exercise is already covered by the students in the Preparatory Classes and in the first year of the course, it becomes even more advanced for our young artists in the second year. Beyond posing, which refers to the art of drawing a particular attitude or a specific posture for a character to make it expressive, this workshop was an opportunity for the students to imagine and create a character entirely from the world of the game Hearthstone from Blizzard Entertainment.
This free online trading card game is set in the medieval-fantasy atmosphere of the video game Warcraft, developed by Blizzard. The game features numerous characters from different castes: mage, demonist, shaman and hunter. Our young 3D artists were given the task of creating a character representing one of these categories, along with its favourite creature.
In order to be consistent with the game, the students took time to study its universe, its existing characters and Hearthstone's graphic palette. Through their choice of shapes and builds, poses and expressions, the aim was to be able to recognise at first glance the category to which the new character belonged. Our students rose to the challenge with flying colours!
