Discover the animated short film "Farewell," from pre-production to post-production.
After exploring the behind-the-scenes of "Parmi les Violettes," "Ceux Pour qui la Lune ne Brille Pas," "Space Dan," "Emboucanator," "Quand les Chamois se Taisent," "Guerre Froide," and "Zone Blanche," we now present the making of "Farewell," the final project of the 2024 class. This film showcases the work of Juliette BERTHE, Samuel PEROUSE DE MONTCLOS, Anne-Sarah STORACE-REINICHE, Viviane SOLLACARO, and Maud CUENOT. Together, they deliver a film as intense as it is emotional, where inner turmoil transforms into a literal tornado on screen.
Weathering the storm of addiction
"Farewell" is set in 1990s Texas and tells the story of Larry, a man in his thirties trying one last time to save his father from alcoholism before choosing his own survival.
Alcoholism, symbolized by a tornado, lies at the heart of this powerful visual metaphor.
Larry, portrayed as a muscular yet vulnerable man, embodies a hero who is both strong and fragile. His father, initially conceived as a monstrous figure, evolved into a more nuanced character, allowing viewers to feel empathy despite the pain he inflicts on Larry. These narrative choices amplify the film's emotional impact by highlighting Larry's complex journey of transformation.
The artistic tornado
Teamwork was essential in the making of "Farewell." Each team member contributed based on their strengths and preferences. This approach allowed everyone to focus on aspects they enjoyed, all while preparing to showcase their skills to the professional world. Animators focused on character movements, while Image specialists, such as Maud, took charge of texturing and artistic direction.
One of the project's major ambitions was to blend 2D and 3D elements—a real challenge for a student team. They explored new techniques to harmoniously integrate the two styles, going through rigorous experimentation and prototyping stages. This process enabled them to innovate and push the boundaries of traditional 3D, achieving a unique and daring visual result.
MoPA: the key to entering the animation world
Throughout their journey, the students benefited from the support and resources of MoPA. The school provided them with professional mentors, including experts in animation and artistic direction, who offered valuable guidance to overcome technical and creative challenges. These targeted interventions helped the team refine their artistic vision and elevate the film’s overall quality.
Juliette shares how her time at MoPA has profoundly shaped her artistic growth. “It’s a place where I was able to discover 3D and explore new mediums to tell stories. But it also taught me a lot about time management, teamwork, and communication—how to lead a team, solve problems, and avoid conflicts. It was a journey of growth, both artistically and personally, filled with many challenges along the way.”
“For anyone looking to join MoPA, I would say you need to be motivated and, above all, ready to work in a team because that’s truly the heart of this school. You explore many different specialties before choosing one, which helps you develop a very comprehensive skill set. By the end of your studies, you have the ability to take 3D wherever your passions lead you, emerging stronger and more confident.”
"Farewell," a unique blend of techniques and emotions, beautifully closes the chapter of Juliette, Samuel, Anne-Sarah, Viviane, and Maud’s studies. Congratulations to them for this outstanding film!
