Making of - Parmi les Violettes
Discover the behind-the-scenes of the graduation film Parmi les Violettes. From pre-production to post-production, dive into the backstage of this short film created by fifth-year students at the MoPA school.
After exploring the behind-the-scenes of Ceux Pour qui la Lune ne Brille Pas, SpaceDan, Emboucanator, Quand les Chamois se Taisent, Guerre Froide, and Zone Blanche, this making-of takes you on a new cinematic journey filled with emotion and meaningful storytelling. Parmi les Violettes represents the culmination of a year of hard work by a team of six students from MoPA: Célia ROUCHET, Aïnhoa WEISSENBERGER, Camille THIRRÉE, Jeanne BOUSQUET, Stella CARNAZZA, and Laura CULIÉ.
Female characters beyond stereotypes
Set in early 20th-century France, the film tells the story of Solange, a young postwoman who discovers sensuality in the arms of Odilon, a sex worker.
Solange, the main character, is a young postwoman in her twenties. She loves life, her job, and approaches everything with passion. But an unexpected situation disrupts her routine when she steps into the world of sex work to deliver a package. There, she meets Odilon, a young sex worker who, beneath a cold and seductive exterior, gradually lets down her barriers with Solange. By the film’s end, the two women discover each other, revealing their sensuality, femininity, and love.
Creating these characters was a challenge: the team aimed to avoid clichés and offer an authentic representation. Odilon, for instance, was given a soft and comforting character design, far from the hypersexualized image often associated with her profession. Solange, on the other hand, stands out for her courage and determination, far from the archetype of the naïve young woman. The characters’ historical uniforms, rigid and constraining, contrast with the freedom and lightness they find through their relationship. This long process enabled the depiction of bodies and personalities that resonate with the film’s creators while breaking stereotypes.
Among the petals of production
Starting in their fourth year at MoPA, 3D animation cinema students choose their specialization: Animation or Image. The Parmi les Violettes team consists of four Image specialists and two Animation specialists, enabling a smooth distribution of tasks throughout the various production phases.
Pre-production revolved around three departments: animatics for timing, storyboarding for framing, and concept art for establishing the visual foundation. During production, each member applied their expertise based on their specialization. Finally, post-production focused on image refinement, allowing the team to finalize the editing and harmonize the project.
Parmi les Violettes stands out for its unique artistic direction, blending 2D and 3D in an accessible and poetic style. Inspired by Japanese animation, particularly Only Yesterday, the film features blurred, watercolor-like backgrounds that immerse viewers in a dreamlike world. This soft visual approach was chosen to make the topic of sexuality accessible to a broad audience, including younger viewers.
Nurturing tomorrow's talent
The recent graduates from the 3D animation school worked autonomously, replicating the working conditions they will encounter in the industry. This experience allowed them to develop essential technical and organizational skills.
Parmi les Violettes seeks to break taboos surrounding sensuality and sexuality by presenting them as joyful and fulfilling themes. The film encourages letting go and self-awareness, whether in self-discovery or life in general.
"To someone starting their studies at the MoPA animation school, I would say it's important to focus on your work but also live outside of it. In our field, we tell stories, and before being able to tell stories, you need to live them."
A huge congratulations to our young filmmakers for this amazing short film!
