Making of – « Quand les Chamois se Taisent »
Discover “Quand les Chamois se Taisent”, an animated short by six talented 5th-year students at the MoPA 3D animation school. From pre-production to post-production, the making of this film will hold no secrets for you!
After having plunged into the worlds of the graduation films “Ceux pour qui la Lune ne brille pas”, “Space Dan” and “Emboucanator”, today discover the world of “Quand les Chamois se Taisent”, directed by Daisy HAIG, Anna BOURGOIN, Mahaut DE KERLEAU, Margot DE SUSANNE D'EPINAY, Lucie DONADIO and Kenza GHILAS, all members of the MoPA 2024 graduating class.
A story of sisterhood: between light and shadow
“Quand les Chamois se Taisent” is the work of six final-year students at the MoPA animation film school, completed in just ten months. Kenza explains that the 6:30-minute short tells the story of two sisters, Romy and Sacha, who set off on a mountain hike. What starts out as an innocent adventure slowly takes a turn for the worse when a game invented by Romy to keep her little sister quiet takes on far too much momentum. The film explores the complexity of sibling relationships, mixing cruelty with the exploration of emotional limits.
From childhood innocence to adolescent rebellion
Lucie introduces us to Romy and Sacha, the two protagonists embodying two radically opposed worldviews. Romy is a 15-year-old teenager in the throes of an identity crisis. Tall, slender and uncomfortable in her own body, her personality is dark and distant. Sasha, her 7-year-old sister, is the complete opposite: full of energy, brightly colored and with an infectious joie de vivre. This visual and emotional contrast, at the heart of the film, is reinforced by the dynamism of the animations and the realism of the sets.
Technical playgrounds
According to Daisy, the project required rigorous organization and a clear division of roles. The first few months were devoted to writing, storyboarding and pre-production, before moving on to 3D modeling, animation and all the post-production stages. For Anna, one of the major challenges was to create a large number of natural outdoor environments, while maintaining harmony between sets and characters. What's more, “Quand les Chamois se Taisent” is one of MoPA's first films to incorporate dialogue, requiring a technical apprenticeship in lipsync and close collaboration with the actresses.
From student adventure to adulthood!
For our young graduates, this project was an opportunity to discover how a studio works, and to learn how to collaborate in a professional dynamic. Supervised by professional instructors and supported by the entire MoPA team and their classmates, they acquired discipline, technique and a valuable perspective on the 3D animation industry. The team can't wait to see where this film takes them, with several festival selections already under their belts.
