For this cross-disciplinary project, the first-year students at MoPA school worked on creating a tribe, a clan, or a family, combining scriptwriting, character design, and sculpting.

In groups, they imagined a universe, defined the relationships between their characters, and then drew and sculpted them. All of this resulted in an exhibition at the school, open to all classes.

 

To do this, the students first worked on the story with their instructor Isabelle COUSTEIL: writing a pitch, a logline, character sheets... Then, they worked on character design with Amandine GARDIE, who emphasized three key principles: simplify, stylize, caricature. Finally, they sculpted a character in clay with Jean LEPRÊTRE – first in 'full-body' form, meaning with clothes, poses, and silhouette. Each sculpture was photographed on a white background, then in a staged environment, and sometimes even colorized.

ODDCAST – La dernière répétition

Logline : To reach your dreams, sometimes you need to surround yourself with the right people.

Pitch : Canada, 1980s. As they prepare for their final rehearsal before a music competition, the Oddcasts discover that their time on stage has been reduced. Will they manage to shine together?

Context : The Oddcasts are an independent music band made up of four young adults, each driven by their own dream, but who will need to learn to work as a team to succeed in the Rock-Off — a music competition offering the chance to record their first album.

Characters :

• Carlos (by Clémentine GIRARD): 25 years old, sociable and hyperactive, dreams of playing in other countries but must learn to put the team before his ego.
• Claudie (by Frida MATT): 20 years old, an arrogant harpist rebelling against her family, she will gradually reveal her sensitivity.
• Xavier (by Melissa TERANY): 21 years old, an introverted and blunt pianist, seeks to regain his self-confidence through the group.
• Edith (by Maya SCHOOF): 20 years old, a shy and poetic singer, dreams of becoming a lyricist and finds in the group a first circle of friends.

 

Notre dernier hiver

Genre : Drama

Logline : Accepting change

Pitch : In a Viking village during the Middle Ages, in the middle of winter, a family tries to overcome the loss of the father. Between denial, escape, and anger, will they manage to stay united despite the changes?

Contex : The Viggosson family lives in Avaldsnes, where the father, Viggo, the jarl's right-hand man, has not returned from the last raid. His death is now a certainty — except for Helga, his wife, who refuses to accept it.

Characters :

• Göran: 17 years old, the eldest son, feels obligated to become a warrior. Suffocated by this role, he will eventually leave home to follow his own path.
• Astrid: 12 years old, his sister, rebellious and stubborn, dreams of becoming a great warrior like her father.
• Petra: 75 years old, grandmother, a healer with blunt words. She has accepted death but struggles to help others through their grief.
• Helga: 42 years old, a grieving mother in denial. Beautiful and fragile, she dreams of family harmony but fears losing her son as well.

 

 

Dernier souffle

Genre : Tragic

Logline : One must know how to resign oneself and face reality in order to achieve inner peace.

Context : 2242, the air on planet Earth has become almost unbreathable. Immunized against this 'toxic' air, newborns are now the only way to save the remaining population. A group of survivors embarks on a quest for a laboratory in hopes of a better life... But do they all have the same objectives?

Pitch :
Three years after giving birth to a baby who was taken from her at birth, Bianca joins a group led by Alexander, who promises to help her find her son. Cuddy, a young boy in the group, becomes the 'key' to this quest. As the journey progresses, Bianca unwittingly develops a maternal bond with him. Upon reaching the laboratory, she discovers that her son is dead and that everything was a lie. In a final act of defiance, she kills Alexander, saves Cuddy, and leaves the place with him and Amara, another survivor."

Characters :

• Bianca – A broken mother, guided by the hope of finding her child. Her bond with Cuddy saves her as much as it weakens her.
• Cuddy – A lovable young boy who sees Bianca as a mother figure. He is at the heart of the dilemma.
• Amara – A young girl in the group, more insightful than one might think.
• Alexander – As an authoritarian leader, he hides his distress behind his maneuvers.

 

This cross-disciplinary project allowed the students to combine several disciplines to bring strong characters to life, supported by carefully crafted universes. From the script to the sculpture, each step required them to demonstrate rigor, creativity, and teamwork. A project that once again showcases their ability to see their ideas through to the end.
