Light and photomontage workshop for our MoPA students!
The second-year 3D animation students at MoPA School in Arles had the opportunity to participate in an intensive week-long workshop. They were guided by Matthieu GROSPIRON, a Computer Graphics Lighting/Compositing Artist and photographer. This week of workshops allowed them to discover techniques in lighting and photomontage, two essential skills in the fields of animation and photography.
The first day began with a study on lighting, where the students learned how to use it to create captivating atmospheres, model characters, and guide the viewer’s eye. They also explored how lighting could help define time and place, enhance visual style, and support storytelling.
On the second day, the future 3D animators tackled the theme of clones—yes, you heard that right! Their task was to create a photomontage featuring the same character multiple times within a single image.
And since a picture is worth a thousand words, check out the creations from our students during the first two days of the workshop:

The workshop concluded with a new photomontage exercise, this time playing with proportions, placing an oversized or miniature character in a setting.
The goal of these final two days was to understand and master the basics of layer integration—an essential tool in animation and photo editing. Mastering layers allows artists to control each element separately, creating more dynamic compositions with attention to detail. Whether it's for correcting, modifying, or adding effects, understanding the use of layers is key to bringing creative ideas to life.
